Masquerade Mask - The Hybrid

It's my first time making a mask all by myself, from cutting, pasting and designing. It's actually for assignment purpose as we were asked to make a mask that reflects our own personality.

---------------------------------- Concept ----------------------------------
The concept of my mask is combining both of my own make up and fashion views, with slight avant garde elements, creating elegant yet high fashion and post-modernism masquerade mask. Most of materials I used was lace, jewels and feathers.

---------------------------------- The Making ----------------------------------
Here I have divided my mask masking session into two stages.

In this stage, I have designed the base of the mask by covering it with soft lace fabric and bordered the edge with hard lace piece. Later on, I have topped up with red jewels to emphasize the eyes part as it isn't hollow. I want the feeling of looking through the lace fabric, leaving with mystery yet elegant.

Since I need it to have a bit of Avant Garde elements like what I have jotted in my concept board, so I have added some other elements to make it relevant to my own concept. I have added a flower-like decorations on the side of my mask made with silver net and soft red feathers. To make it looks more dramatic and exaggerate. Hard black feathers are added uprightly to extend our sights and draw attentions.

---------------------------------- Rational ----------------------------------

The concept of hybrid is inspired by Alexander McQueen from his collection named Plato's Atlantis.

For the base: It is quite conservative in the design as it is reflecting the status of aristocracy, with the feeling of mystery, grandeur yet elegant.
The side: The design is slightly exaggerate and incompatible with its base as it shows some of the futuristic and modern elements. Silver symbolise futuristic, red symbolise the strong will of change while black symbolise mystery.

This mask shows the contradiction within human, feel like thinking and creating something out of the box yet being restricted by some factors. This is why we come out with avant garde, pushing of the boundaries of what is accepted as the norm or the status quo.
The Hybrid, should be a creation beyond limit.
